Alternative Remedies for Headaches Without Harmful Side Effects

Headache is one of the most common illnesses that affect people irrespective of their gender or age. Though not considered serious malady by many, headaches can be debilitating, as well as quite difficult to alleviate; one of the reasons why there are many specialized clinics for treating the problem. Stress, fatigue, insomnia and many other lifestyle patterns can affect the onset of headaches.

Often, over the counter medicines with side-effects like aspirin or acetaminophen are taken to relieve headaches, though severe problems like migraines or cluster headaches may require proper treatment from specialized doctors. Negative side-effects from prolonged use of medicines treating headaches are known to create a lot of health complications; a good reason why people turn to alternative medicines that do not come with harmful side effects.

With rising side-effects of popping pills every time a person gets a headache, health conscious people have started opting for age-old home remedies as an alternative to allopathic pills. The advantage of turning to the natural cure or naturopathy is that it is simple, does not contain harmful chemicals, is completely safe and not very expensive.

1. Biofeedback Technique

A biofeedback instrument allows a person to watch the bodily changes that take place within the body that may be contributing to headaches. Through the biofeedback technique, the medical practitioner learns about the muscle tension, body temperature, functioning of the brain and other signs which give clues regarding the stress levels of the patient. The patient is then given skills to enable him/her to actually control the flow of blood to the brain through special techniques. In simple terms, through this procedure, a patient becomes aware of the processes that influence the occurrence of headaches, and then works towards modifying those biological changes for prevention.

2. Get Some Sunshine

Research has found the lifestyle where people are often spending time in closed air conditioned spaces is one of the major contribution to headaches in working class people. Getting out and walking at least for 15 minutes a day, breathing in fresh air and basking in sunlight would help people find relief from recurring headaches, besides helping in general well being of the person.

3. Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been effective in relieving headaches of all nature without any side-effects for ages. Initially practiced in China, the therapy of acupuncture where needles are inserted at specific points to restore proper flow of Qi, is now gaining strong foothold even in developed nations.

4. Vinegar Treatment

Dip a small towel in white vinegar and squeeze out extra vinegar from it. Wrap the towel around the head, close eyes and relax for 15 minutes. Repeat for recurring headaches 5-6 times a day. The simple home remedy works much better than many known pain killers.

5. Ginger Tea

Crush an inch of fresh ginger root. Bring water to boil and add the crushed ginger to the water and cook for some time. Strain the mix and add a dash of sugar or honey for taste and consume it while still hot. Ginger tea is known to be as effective as aspirin in relieving headaches.

6. Lavender Oil

Mix 1 tsp of lavender essential oil with equal amount of carrier oil like almond or orange. Apply the mixture to forehead and temples. Inhale the aroma of lavender deeply and relax. Headache will subside in few minutes.
